Our earliest
patterns of postural tone and movement are established through physiological
flexion and physiological extension. These whole-body patterns develop before
and shortly after birth. They set the foundation for our primitive reflexes, righting
reactions and equilibrium responses: that is, how we establish basic survival
patterns to function, organize our verticality and maintain balance. Their
integration allows for the complex movements of our everyday activities.
Movement is not
simply muscular or neuromuscular in nature. It is neurocellular; all the cells
of the body participate in organized movement. With this foundation, we learn
to relate to earth and heaven, establish our patterns of grasping, releasing,
gathering and reaching. We learn to bear weight, establish our axis, find
verticality, maintain balance and locomote.
This is an experiential
class inviting participants to engage in touch and movement activities to
reveal pathways for movement. These building blocks of movement allow us a more
effective relationship with ourselves, with the environment and with others.
They can help us, and our clients integrate more effective and natural ways of
overcoming holding patterns and habitual ways of moving.
